Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): The Sixth Chakra

Third Eye Chakra – Awareness, Inner Vision, Intuition

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

The 6th Chakra (also known as the Third Eye or Ajna chakra), is located behind the forehead, with the pineal gland at its center. We associate the sun and moon with this chakra.

From the Perspective of Energy Healing

Through the Ajna chakra, we gain access to our inner potential for knowing and retrieving any information. For example, downloads from our Divine wisdom come in through the crown of the head and get processed here.

The Ajna chakra’s main job is to decode downloads, and format them in terms of subtle sensory impressions. As a result, the conscious mind is then able to make the connection between Divinity and individuality, and to have access to greater wisdom.

From the Perspective of the Physiology

We mentioned that the pineal gland, which produces serotonin, sits in the middle of the sixth chakra. The pineal gland’s role is to help regulate our awareness. It accomplishes this through communication with the reticular activating system (RAS). The RAS system is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so important stuff gets through.

The pineal gland:

  • produces melatonin to help the thalamus shut down and bring sleep,
  • produces serotonin to bring the thalamus back on line,
  • and bring wakefulness as well as DMT (a neurotransmitter) which activates dream images.

Consequently, healing for the pineal gland – and the energy channels between it and the RAS – is especially helpful for people suffering from sleep abnormalities.

Experiencing various states of consciousness

There is a point of balance in the pineal that allows the conscious mind to experience the states of waking, dreaming and sleeping. The pineal gland can be compared to a switch which allows us to experience various states of consciousness, including all and none of these three major states.

We can experience the gap between states of consciousness – for example, between waking, dreaming and sleep states. It is also experienced by transcending the activity of the mind. The experience of the gap is a state of deep mental rest which, at the same time, has a corresponding measurable effect of rest on the body.

Pure consciousness, experienced in the gap between the states of waking, dreaming and sleeping consciousness, takes on the quality of awareness when present in Ajna Chakra.
