Irritable Bowel Syndrome: a Disorder of the Colon

Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the colon.Commonly, IBS causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. It is a chronic condition that must be managed long term.

Even though the symptoms are uncomfortable, IBS is not an inflammatory bowel disease. The condition doesn’t cause changes in bowel tissue or increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Many people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress.
