Irritable Bowel Syndrome: a Disorder of the Colon

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the colon. IBS commonly results in cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.

Even though IBS symptoms are uncomfortable, it is not an inflammatory bowel disease. This is due to the fact that the condition does not cause changes in bowel tissue, nor does it increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

In addition, it is a chronic condition that must be managed long term. Caring for the microbiome of the body is essential. Many people have found they can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle, and stress.
